From the age of four, he started learning the violin and went on to train in the traditions of great masters like Pandit Bhaskarbuva Bakhle, Pandit Bapurao Ketkar, Pandit Shridhar Parsekar, and Dr. Yehudi Menuhin. This unique training helped him develop a strong command over both Indian and Western styles of music. His playing beautifully reflects the gayaki ang, where the violin expresses the emotion and depth of vocal music. With over 50 years of experience, Pandit Atulkumar Upadhye has performed across India and around the world, including countries like the USA, UK, France, Germany, and Italy. He has been a part of prestigious music festivals such as Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav and Tansen Samaroh. His jugalbandis with legendary artists like Tejendra Majumdar, Ronu Majumdar, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Sivamani, and Shahid Parvez are widely appreciated by audiences. Apart from performing, he is also a composer, teacher, and author. He has composed music for films and documentaries, created violin orchestras, and released albums like The Magic of Four Strings and Enchanting Seasons. He has also written books on music and violin to guide and inspire students. As a teacher, he has dedicated his life to nurturing young talent through his Violin Academy in Pune. He has also contributed to music education by designing courses for Lalit Kala Kendra at Savitribai Phule Pune University for over 25 years. He is also the founder of the Swarazankar Music Festival, which started in Pune in 2009 and has now grown into one of India’s largest music festival chains, giving a platform to both legendary and upcoming artists.
